System Explorer is a tool for accessing a variety of system internals. It can also be used as a Task Manager replacement with detailed information about processes, startup entries, explorer/IE add-ons, uninstallers, services, drivers, connections, opened files etc. It has a registry/file snapshot feature so that changes to the system can be computed and displayed in tree view or text list format. It also has a processes security tool that checks your processes against an online database.
Alternatively, System Explorer Portable is available.

Hi, System Explorer is a highly regarded software. However the questions here are important. If you look at their site you will see they have a graph of anti-virus usage. How did they get that info ? Conjecture: when they call home. Perhaps they market such info ? We should bring this question directly to System Explorer and also to Wilders. I would like to add their two softwares to my layered security mix, but first know more about how and why.

Fixed in this version. Runs as limited user but, obviously, some features not available.

No link for v1.5? Website offers only v1.4 as an alternative. Any suggestions?

Maybe it's just me, but the program (v2.7.3) feels bloated and is not as useful as it used to be. It uses too much memory, is slow, and has too many unnecessary features. I hope the developer creates a 'lite' version.

Same problem of large amount of RAM Memory, netbook asus 1005ha, xp sp3.
Dubliner2011-02-09 20:04
Does anyone else find that ver 2.7.2 Portable gradually hogs a large amount of RAM Memory ?
System spec Win XP Pro SP3 on DELL Optiplex G260 with 512MB RAM.

Pardon, but... Since everybody seem to think that v.1.5 is better, it would be a nice idea to give a link to download it :-)
Captain Fredo2011-02-06 17:12
LOL :-) (JackAss to Mike)
JackAss2011-02-05 19:01
Mike, this program is definitely not for you. You had better stop using Microsoft Office, Microsoft knows everything about Windows, or so they would have us believe. While you're at it, stop using Internet Explorer or any other browsers, your anti-malware software, your firewall software. Add every disk defragmenter you come across, not to mention many other utilities your computer already uses that you may not even know about. All of these are written by people who know a lot about how Windows works, and all have potential to mess your computer up. Just package your computer up, send it back to where you got it from and ask for a box of Lego blocks instead.
Without a program like this, with just your standard Windows task manager you don't have much of a clue what else is going out from your computer unless you know all about traceroute, netstat and a bunch of other utilities, and even then I'll take a bet you don't know what all is going out. Don't ever install a firewall and watch the incoming and outgoing connections, being allowed and blocked - you'll be scared into not using the firewall either.
Mike2011-01-19 14:46
How much do you trust some an application written by someone who knows everything about how windows works? Odd connections out going in the program make me think your asking for trouble with this one.
Intercontinental2010-04-21 08:33
I agree with rhapdog. Any connection enabled without user's consent is just not acceptable. This does not mean the call is vicious, but that the procedure is. Otherwise, the application is rich, and worthy.

"Looks like a nice app, but why is it connecting to www2.skok.cz in Prague in Czech Republic"
because it's checking for updates, which can be disabled.
i noticed a pile of functions are not working in the latest build (2.0.9)

Looks like a nice app, but why is it connecting to www2.skok.cz in Prague in Czech Republic.
Lyx2009-12-24 04:58
I too prefer 1.5 for now, because i have no plans upgrading to win7, and because with 1.5, i could only show the pages which i need, resulting in a window which just displays what i need, not more. With 2.0, that finegrained control isn't there.
tproli2009-12-12 13:54
Thanks, keeping that in mind when upgrading to win7.
joby_toss2009-12-12 11:43
@tproli: I don't think v1.5 supports Windows7, but v2.0 does. Also support for both previous versions 1.4 and 1.5 was dropped. But if it works for you better, there is no need to "fix what's not broken" :-).
tproli2009-12-12 11:31
Thanks joby_toss for the info. I was about to drop the new version because of those annoyances. I'm still not convinced though, v1.5 (which I use all the time) starts _much_ faster and does what I need nicely.

Also v.2.0 doesn't try to (automatically) contact home anymore! It's definitely a keeper!

"System Explorer is packed using UPX which is used to hide malware."
Knives are also sometimes used to kill people -> please stop using knives.
Seriously, is portablefreeware.com suffering from braindead zombies, or are these commenters paid by antivirus companies to spread this kind of bullshit-logic?
rhapdog2009-11-17 23:27
Automatically connecting to www2.skok.com, even if it is to check for updates, is not a good thing for me. Especially if this cannot be disabled in a configuration. I'll have to pass on this program. I don't like update checks unless i initiate them.
atomizer2009-10-27 14:39
in the license it says it is using an internet connection to check for updates only
Steve2009-07-10 20:31
System Explorer is packed using UPX which is used to hide malware. Why would you shrink the code of such a tiny app unless you were trying to hide something.
Further. System explorer initiates a connection back to www2.skok.com??? Why? No mention of it in the program documentation.
guest292009-05-29 11:17
This is a nice app. Similar to Sysinternals Process Explorer. I recently used this to clean up a badly infected PC that would NOT allow Process Explorer to run...
