Everything is a powerful search tool that locates files and folders by file name instantly, and includes an FTP and Web server interface. It also can search files by their contents. Unlike Windows search, Everything initially displays all files and folders on your computer. You simply type in part of the desired file name to limit what files and folders are displayed instantly. The more you type, the more specific the list becomes.

Note that the instant-search capability only works on NTFS/ReFS-formatted drives and only uses file and folder names in a file index. The program can separately catalog non-NTFS/ReFS and network servers for searching on a schedule.

This is a great program. I've found very helpful tracking down misplaced or seemingly lost files.

In case it does not remembers sort order, you have to edit 2 lines in Everything.ini:

Gah, lost my settings due to upgrading :(

Just a heads up to those upgrading, especially those with folder/file exclusions which is incredibly annoying to lose.

@Midas:...No sweat...;-)

After due deliberation with my editorial team, I just "spiked" the former (redundant) "Beta 1.3.4.662b" extended notice (time-stamped 2014-06-08 12:38) , which was, in essence, already duplicated in the relevant forum topic anyway:

Cheers,

@__philippe: to avoid clutter, please consider deleting or moving the previous *beta* notice to the forum topic. Thanks. :)

Special2013-12-18 20:47

Yeah I'm using that but the x64 version, anyway after some trial and error I figured it out. It seems it either needs to be ran as administrator, and if not you need to go into the options and under "Indexes" > "NTFS" and uncheck whats there to have it play nice with firewalls.

v1.2.1

__philippe2013-12-18 18:09

Are you perchance using the "Installer" version ?

The "Portable" beta version I currently run under Win XP does not try to connect to the outside world:

I'm using the latest beta, can anyone tell me how I can get this to stop trying to connect to the internet everytime I launch it? Option wise things like "check for updates on start up" are unchecked, etc.

v1.2.1

acknot2013-08-07 21:52

Since january 2013 the author of Everything has picked up development again. There seem to be quite a few improvments.
Still beta versions but they're working great!
Look for the beta section at the authors's website www.voidtools.com

v1.2.1

ChipsNHotSauce2011-09-06 16:49

It's very good but it hasn't been updated in almost 2 years. Fails to index files on limited account = requires admin rights. Also I've never acquired over 300,000 files in my 10+ years of using computers so I can't attest to how fast it is with millions of files, but it sure is pretty darn fast with just a few hundred thousand files. For FAT32 volumes I use 'SearchMyFiles' by nirsoft,

V1.2.1

Everything also works well with App Launchers such as Launchy. Newest version of Everything is 1.2.1.451a, with some great new features (including search history), but since it is an alpha version, it might be unstable in some situations.

Everything.exe is by design a portable app (though not stealth, since I think it writes some settings to Registry).

Grab it from:
http://www.voidtools.com/Everything-1.2.1.451a.zip

Someone has built a portable copy of this version. Search for "EverythingPortableAlpha_1.2.1.451a_Dev_Test_1.paf.exe" at the PortableApps.com site.

Everything will search only file and folder names, and it relies the NTFS MFT for building a tiny index, so it is blazing fast. Its only con is that it cannot search directly in network drives (but will search removable drives).

For network drives, try the excellent "IYF (Index your Files)", "Lan Search Pro" or "Songbird". If you want to search within files, I would suggest "AgentRansack" or "Locate32". For searching within Archives, try the old "Archive Peek" utility (google/bing it; it will work even on Windows95!) or the "LookDisk" app here on this site.

V1.2.1

Gazonga2011-03-17 22:32

Produces instant feedback with over 2 million files. No other file search can touch this period.

V1.2.1

Magibon2011-03-04 04:19

They released a Portable.Zip version, Everything-1.2.1.371.zip (portable, 272 KB).

Thanks for great info.

V1.2.1

acknot2011-02-24 00:19

@Kermode: It's not suspicious. In fact, it does make sense. Everything reads information directly from the NTFS Master File Table (which is continuously updated by the USN Journaling System of NTFS partitions).
This trick only works on NTFS drives - Everything doesn't have to index, the index is already there. That's why it's so fast.

V1.2.1

Kermode2010-10-02 16:56

I find it suspicious that it only supports NTFS formatted drives - that doesn't make sense. It should support any filesystem the OS can read - perhaps it hacks lowlevel? Not keen on that.

vbb2010-09-09 12:34

I have tested many search tools, from crappy lame native Windoz search to AgentRansack, from XYPlorerFree search to AvaFind. I think no geek could ever live with only & only one search tool. But the first tool IMHO, is the very nice Everything. I wonder what indexing algorithm it uses, however I think it might directly use the MFT for such a blazing indexing, and maybe it is one of the reasons that it cannot read FAT, because NTFS has a revolutionary indexing system optimizing search & safety issues.
The super lovely thing about it is its Regex support capability, which is the eminent characteristic of my favourite 2nd choice - AgentRansack which can search contents, as well.
The small index size (and app itself), is nothing that could be neglected.

@Bill: You can use AgentRansack, though it dont index, but is fast enough. And of course you can run another copy of Everything on your remote computer, and then start an ETP server. Learn more here: http://www.voidtools.com/faq.php

@Hovic: It is not necessary to restart Everything. It monitors file system changes, while rests in the background without any resource hogging.

Jon Wright2010-05-13 05:10

The EXE is an installer. Download the 'portable' zip instead.

FYI, beta versions are available here:

Banshee2009-09-29 14:19

Hmm, not sure about what privs this needs to look at the disk index, but I cant run it on my locked to work laptop. Also, lookdisk isnt the only other portable option, firebird is excellent (although does not build indexes, searches on the fly - but it does group its findings well, and can search in file too, also I would get the older version rather than the new one with the half-arsed file manager built in). Free commander also has a built in search facility which is very advanced, also portable.

Luis2009-04-11 11:01

By far the fastest search file software for NTFS that i ever had and the only one that I use.

Transcontinental2009-03-18 00:42

Nothing compares to Everything ;) Wow, this is a gem!

Mike2009-03-16 11:13

It works well for me. This just might be your chance to download Everything from the Internet.

Hovic2009-03-16 05:59

It works incredibly fast, but reindexing is not observed until you restart the software.

Bill2009-03-16 00:09

This is a nice application but still, it would be nice if it indexed network drives. I have a Buffalo TeraStation with a couple of USB connected drives that I use for longer term file storage at home. Right now I can only search about 1/3rd of my files (although it is a very fast search). Not a criticism, more of a wish list.

Webfork2009-03-14 13:51

Much advanced in terms of search results over the only other portable search program "LookDisk" (which has other advantages like duplicate file finding and in-text searching). It seems to slow down my computer while the initial index is drawn, even when its supposed to be working in the background, but after that its very fast.

a2009-03-14 07:42

One thing that most file searches are at fault at is the index file size, but that isn't the case here. it's amazingly small, it's blazing fast! highly recommended.

[BOT]Fluffy2009-03-14 07:23

@Meks: If your hardware is incompatible why bother leaving a comment? That's like someone saying Nexuiz is worthless because they have an integrated chipset. This is a fantastic piece of software for those of us with multiple NTFS hard drives and extremely useful since the results are instantaneous and the scanning is incredibly fast. For me it is the epitome of what file search tools should be and I recommend it to anyone with NTFS drives. Granted, if you want to index your USB drive itself you're better off finding another piece of software, but that doesn't mean it's not an amazing application itself.

Meks2009-03-14 05:27

Seriously: How useful is a search tool that only works with NTFS? Od am I the last one to run FAT32? And what about the upcoming exFAT?
Well, at least to me this is a pointless piece of software. For others, still, it might be quite useful, if the description is correct.

jake2009-03-13 18:41

I discovered this program a few weeks back and now I use it many times a day. The program is far from perfect (rebuilds the search indexes spontaneously on occasion) but it's the fastest program of it kind that I've ever seen. Two important notes: 1) NTFS only. 2) Searches for Files and Folder names ONLY - does not search file contents.
