Yeah I'm using that but the x64 version, anyway after some trial and error I figured it out. It seems it either needs to be ran as administrator, and if not you need to go into the options and under "Indexes" > "NTFS" and uncheck whats there to have it play nice with firewalls.

I'm using the latest beta, can anyone tell me how I can get this to stop trying to connect to the internet everytime I launch it? Option wise things like "check for updates on start up" are unchecked, etc.

Since january 2013 the author of Everything has picked up development again. There seem to be quite a few improvments.
Still beta versions but they're working great!

It's very good but it hasn't been updated in almost 2 years. Fails to index files on limited account = requires admin rights. Also I've never acquired over 300,000 files in my 10+ years of using computers so I can't attest to how fast it is with millions of files, but it sure is pretty darn fast with just a few hundred thousand files. For FAT32 volumes I use 'SearchMyFiles' by nirsoft,

@Kermode: It's not suspicious. In fact, it does make sense. Everything reads information directly from the NTFS Master File Table (which is continuously updated by the USN Journaling System of NTFS partitions).
This trick only works on NTFS drives - Everything doesn't have to index, the index is already there. That's why it's so fast.

I find it suspicious that it only supports NTFS formatted drives - that doesn't make sense. It should support any filesystem the OS can read - perhaps it hacks lowlevel? Not keen on that.

The EXE is an installer. Download the 'portable' zip instead.

Hmm, not sure about what privs this needs to look at the disk index, but I cant run it on my locked to work laptop. Also, lookdisk isnt the only other portable option, firebird is excellent (although does not build indexes, searches on the fly - but it does group its findings well, and can search in file too, also I would get the older version rather than the new one with the half-arsed file manager built in). Free commander also has a built in search facility which is very advanced, also portable.

By far the fastest search file software for NTFS that i ever had and the only one that I use.

It works incredibly fast, but reindexing is not observed until you restart the software.

This is a nice application but still, it would be nice if it indexed network drives. I have a Buffalo TeraStation with a couple of USB connected drives that I use for longer term file storage at home. Right now I can only search about 1/3rd of my files (although it is a very fast search). Not a criticism, more of a wish list.

Much advanced in terms of search results over the only other portable search program "LookDisk" (which has other advantages like duplicate file finding and in-text searching). It seems to slow down my computer while the initial index is drawn, even when its supposed to be working in the background, but after that its very fast.

One thing that most file searches are at fault at is the index file size, but that isn't the case here. it's amazingly small, it's blazing fast! highly recommended.

@Meks: If your hardware is incompatible why bother leaving a comment? That's like someone saying Nexuiz is worthless because they have an integrated chipset. This is a fantastic piece of software for those of us with multiple NTFS hard drives and extremely useful since the results are instantaneous and the scanning is incredibly fast. For me it is the epitome of what file search tools should be and I recommend it to anyone with NTFS drives. Granted, if you want to index your USB drive itself you're better off finding another piece of software, but that doesn't mean it's not an amazing application itself.

Seriously: How useful is a search tool that only works with NTFS? Od am I the last one to run FAT32? And what about the upcoming exFAT?
Well, at least to me this is a pointless piece of software. For others, still, it might be quite useful, if the description is correct.

I discovered this program a few weeks back and now I use it many times a day. The program is far from perfect (rebuilds the search indexes spontaneously on occasion) but it's the fastest program of it kind that I've ever seen. Two important notes: 1) NTFS only. 2) Searches for Files and Folder names ONLY - does not search file contents.
